Prepare your business

In Australia, natural hazards such as floods can strike without warning. Your main aim is to ensure your business continues operating during an emergency. Carefully researching and planning before an emergency will help prepare you to act quickly and effectively.

Use the Australian Government business emergency management plan template to prepare an emergency management and recovery plan. It comprises three plans to help protect your business before, during and after an emergency:

  1. The continuity plan to help you prepare your business for an emergency by identifying risks to critical areas and how to protect them best.
  2. The emergency action plan to help you and your staff know what to do during an emergency.
  3. The recovery plan to guide your business’s recovery after an emergency.

Other actions to take

Once your continuity, action and recovery plans have been completed, list and attach copies of supporting documentation, including:

  • detailed emergency procedures;
  • evacuation maps;
  • insurance information.

Review your plans regularly and ensure they are updated whenever your business changes. Practice your emergency action plan with your staff to identify missing steps and ensure everyone knows what is expected of them.
