Open spaces are vital for communities to socialise, play, picnic, exercise and connect with nature. They foster health, build community and enhance a town’s character, offering economic and tourism benefits.

In Lismore, as the city recovers from the 2022 natural disaster, these spaces play a critical role in supporting residents' well-being. Amid discussions about the potential retreat from high flood-risk areas — a complex and gradual process — Lismore is focused on rebuilding. Providing quality open spaces where residents can be active, enjoy the outdoors and reconnect with nature remains a key priority for the city’s recovery and future.

The Open Space Strategy 2024-2034 outlines a 10-year plan to guide the planning and management of public open spaces to benefit both the community and the environment. It covers natural areas, parks, trails and outdoor sport and recreation facilities under Council ownership or management but excludes indoor sport and recreation facilities.
