Our plan to increase Aboriginal employment and cultural awareness

In 2013, the Northern Rivers' first local government Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) was developed and adopted by Council.

The plan, which was endorsed by Reconciliation Australia, was created through a collaborative process with Aboriginal stakeholders to promote equality for Aboriginal people.

It set targets such as increasing the proportion of Council's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce to 6% and improving cultural awareness among staff.

Council's second Reconciliation Action Plan, launched in 2017, focuses on three main areas: community engagement, cultural awareness and competency and employment and procurement.

The third Reconciliation Action Plan was launched in August 2022 at NAIDOC Day celebrations after it was delayed due to COVID-19 and the February 2022 natural disaster. It is based on Lismore City Council's four values: Communicate, Respect, Strive and Passionate.
